Hair Restoration Surgery

We welcome you to our very unique hair transplant practice up here in beautiful upstate New York. We are the only full-time medical practice in New York State offering hair transplantation outside of New York City . Since 1989 we have been providing world-class hair restoration surgery to patients who have come to us from 39 different states and 21 different foreign countries. We provide the full range of hair transplant services, including female hair transplantation, hair restoration for trans-gender patients, eyebrow restoration, and corrective surgery to make old “pluggy” work look natural. All of our hair transplantation is based on dissecting out individual follicular unit grafts of 1-3 hairs each under microscopes. In some patients, we use DFU (double follicular unit) grafts for the central areas if hair characteristics are favorable. Our goal is to always to have a relationship of mutual trust between doctor and patient. Over the years, this has been the key to our continued success and high rate of patient satisfaction.

Dr. Michael Beehner, our medical director, has been performing hair transplants for 24 years and is one of the foremost leaders in teaching and research for our specialty. In 2007 he received the prestigious Manfred Lucas Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery – only the 8th person to receive the highest award  the society gives out. In 1999 he received the Platinum Follicle Award from the ISHRS for the best research in the world.

Dr. Beehner authored 4 chapters in the recently published Hair Transplantation  textbook edited by Unger and Shapiro, and is currently in the process of writing three new chapters for two different textbooks.  He is a diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and a past president of the Board. He served three years as co-editor of the  Hair Transplant Forum International, the principal journal of our specialty worldwide. His nomenclature system for describing the zones and landmarks of the balding scalp, which he published in Dermatologic Surgery in 2001 is used as the world’s standard system of nomenclature.

Dr. Christopher Pawlinga joined our practice in 2006 after having completed a rigorous one year ISHRS Fellowship in hair transplant surgery under the direction of Dr. Beehner. He has been a valuable member of the Saratoga surgical staff since that time, having performed over 600 surgeries in that span of time.  He continues to attend ISHRS meetings around the world and live surgery workshops to keep his skills at the highest level and up to date. His outstanding results are displayed in his two gallery pages on this website.

We are aware of the important decision someone like yourself has to make in choosing who to entrust your hair restoration surgery to. If its done well and with artistry and naturalness, it is truly a life-changing experience that enhances ones sense of well being and self image. We do encourage our consultation patients to visit a couple other transplant practices in addition to ours, so that they choose the practice and physician they are most comfortable with.

If what you read here on this website leads you to want to take the next step, we encourage you, if at all possible, to make a consultation appointment with either Dr. Beehner or Pawlinga. You are also welcome to send in any informal questions you might have through the "open question" feature on the home page. We will answer you promptly. All surgery is performed at our main Saratoga Springs office, but we conduct consultations monthly in Newburgh, NY and East Syracuse, NY. Our consultations are free and there is no pressure whatsoever. If you live too far away to visit us in person, you are welcome to conduct a “long distance consultation” with us, which encompasses sending your history along with a few photos of your scalp, and then, if the person is still serious about possibly having surgery with us, we do insist on a lengthy telephone call between doctor and patient, to be sure a relationship of mutual trust and reasonable expectations exists. We wish you the best in your search for the best remedy for your hair loss.
